About Sprunki

Sprunki is a browser-based music layering game created by NyankoBfLol, a 15-year-old Thai developer, and released in August 2024. It started as a fan-made mod of Incredibox — the 2009 interactive music toy by French studio So Far So Good — but replaced every character, sound, and visual with entirely original content. The mod reached millions of views on YouTube and TikTok within weeks, spawned an enormous community of fan art and animations, and generated hundreds of follow-up fan-made phases.

The core mechanic is drag-and-drop music layering. Seven empty stage slots sit above a panel of 20 character icons divided into four categories: Beats, Effects, Melodies, and Vocals. Dragging an icon onto a slot makes that character loop their sound indefinitely, synchronized to a shared tempo. Fill all seven slots and you have a complete layered track. The loops are designed to harmonize regardless of what you combine — there are no wrong answers — so the game is less about correctness and more about composition, experimentation, and discovering hidden interactions.

Sprunki's most distinctive feature, and a major reason for its viral reach, is Horror Mode. Dragging the character Black — a shadowy figure in a black top hat — onto the stage triggers a transition: the background shifts to a flashing pattern, every audio loop distorts into a darker corrupted version, and each character transforms into a horror variant with a specific narrative meaning. Wenda turns aggressive, Pinki regresses into emotional numbness, Simon becomes predatory. The community has built extensive lore around what each transformation represents.

Following the viral explosion, the community created dozens of fan-made phases — standalone mods using the Sprunki character roster as a foundation, each with new sounds, visual styles, and horror variants. Phases 1 and 2 are from the original creator; everything from Phase 3 onward is community-authored. NyankoBfLol officially discontinued the project in late 2024 following a harassment campaign, but third-party sites continue to host the original. The character Wenda became the breakout fan favourite, generating more fan art than any other in the roster.

Key Features

  • Drag-and-drop music layering — 20 character icons across Beats, Effects, Melodies, and Vocals; any seven-character combination harmonizes by design
  • Horror Mode: drag Black onto stage to transform the entire game — corrupted audio, flashing visuals, and unique horror variants for every character
  • Hidden bonus animations unlock when specific character combinations are placed simultaneously — nothing is indicated in-game, discovery is by experimentation
  • 20 uniquely designed characters, each with a distinct personality and dedicated sound (kick drums, piano, synth bass, trumpet, chiptune, vocals)
  • Muting individual characters mid-session creates live drops and build-ups — the primary performance tool
  • Sandbox with no score or failure state — entirely compositional, sessions last as long as you want

Controls

Mouse drag from bottom panel → drop onto stage slot — adds character and their looping sound
Mouse drag character off stage → removes them and their sound
Click character on stage — mute or toggle (version-dependent)
Spacebar — pause/play (version-dependent)
R — reset and clear all characters (version-dependent)
MobileTap and drag characters from the bottom panel onto stage slots; tap a character on stage to mute or remove them

How to Play

  1. 1Seven empty slots form your stage at the top. Below them is the character panel — 20 icons organized into Beats, Effects, Melodies, and Vocals.
  2. 2Drag any icon from the bottom panel and drop it onto an empty stage slot. The character immediately begins looping their sound, synchronized with everything else on stage.
  3. 3Keep adding characters to build up layers. Any combination sounds musical — there are no wrong answers. Fill all seven slots for a full layered track.
  4. 4Mute or remove characters by clicking them on stage (mute) or dragging them off (remove). Use this to create drops, transitions, and dynamics in your track.
  5. 5Experiment with specific combinations — placing certain characters together triggers hidden bonus animations that play automatically on stage. Nothing tells you which combos work; that's the discovery.
  6. 6To enter Horror Mode, drag Black — the shadowy character with the top hat — onto any slot. The game transforms entirely. Remove Black to return to normal.

Tips & Tricks

  • Start with a Beat character to anchor the tempo. Oren, the orange headphone character, is the standard starting kick drum — place him first and everything else will lock onto that rhythm.
  • Add vocals last. Build the instrumental bed first (Beat → Effects → Melody) before layering in vocal characters. This lets you hear whether the vocal fits rather than having it dominate the mix from the start.
  • Use muting as a performance tool. Briefly muting the Beat character while everything else plays creates a quiet moment — the re-entry when you un-mute hits significantly harder. This is the main dynamic technique available.
  • For bonus animations, try placing all characters from a single category simultaneously — for example, all five Melody characters at once. Some bonuses require cross-category combinations; the community has documented them in wikis if you prefer looking them up.
  • In Horror Mode, add characters one at a time rather than all at once. The distorted loops interact with each other in ways that are easier to appreciate when you can isolate each character's transformation.

FAQ

No. Incredibox is the original 2009 interactive music game by French studio So Far So Good. Sprunki is a fan-made mod created in 2024 by a developer known as NyankoBfLol — it uses the same drag-and-drop layering mechanic but has entirely original characters, sounds, and visuals, including Horror Mode, which has no equivalent in the standard Incredibox game.

Drag the character Black — the shadowy figure wearing a black top hat — onto any empty stage slot. The game transitions immediately: the background shifts to a flashing pattern, all audio loops distort into corrupted darker versions, and every character on stage transforms into a horror variant. Drag Black off the stage to return to normal.

Placing specific character combinations on stage simultaneously triggers short animated bonus sequences — the game does not tell you which combinations work. Experimenting with all characters in a single category at once is a common starting approach. Community wikis and YouTube compilation videos document all known combinations if you prefer to look them up.

Phases 1 and 2 are from the original creator NyankoBfLol. Phases 3 onward are fan-made mods by other community members, each built on the Sprunki character foundation but featuring different sounds, visual styles, and horror content. Hundreds of fan-made phases now exist under the Sprunki name.

In November 2024, a harassment campaign targeting NyankoBfLol led him to private and remove the original versions and officially discontinue the project. Third-party gaming sites continue to host playable versions of the original mod. A cancelled remastered build was later posted on itch.io by the creator as a record.
